Part V - They Never Looked Back

from The God Fearing Boy by Fred Oakman

/

lyrics

The ashes from the bible hit the ground. And just because those words did burn doesn’t mean that they weren’t found. It smells like choir songs sung in the rain. It’s those old familiar hauntings that keep you running for all your days. She asked that God Fearing Boy that night “Will you run with me if I decide to leave before tomorrow’s light?” He responded with a smile to hide his fear “This place is all I’ve ever known, so tomorrow I’ll keep here.” He put his fear before his love, she lost her faith in God above and Saint Peter would condemn him. Saint Peter would condemn him for the God Fearing Boy he was. The ashes still remained mixed in the dirt. The preacher found a means to hide the ways in which he’d hurt. He knew his boy would leave him and as he passed him by the well he said “I don’t hate you son but I’ll wish you straight to Hell.” His journey started there and ended by that bridge under fireworks. He held onto her. Saying “Please Lord, please do forgive me for my father he was sick. If what he thought was true, he’s damn near better off without me and so much better off with you.” He put his love before his fear. He held her tight she shed a tear and Saint Peter wouldn’t touch him. No Saint Peter wouldn’t touch him. There’s not a man more honest or sincere. So he never looked back, and she never looked back. God has a way of taking more than what we ever have for slack.
